Renuka Temple established in 1814, is a popular religious destination in Nahan, Himachal Pradesh. It positions on the verge of the famous lake Renuka. As per Hindu belief, Renuka is the wife of Jamudagni. She is the mother of Parashu Ram, who is considered as the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It was in her memory that this famous temple was created. It is popularly believed that Renuka Devi is the incarnation of Goddess Durga.
The legend goes like this. As Jamudagni asked his son Parashu Ram to behead his wife due to sudden rage, Parashu Ram did so even without a word. But he asked his father that he should be allowed to meet his mother.
Hence, every year the Renuka Temple and it’s surroundings fall for a popular festivity, Renuka fest, in which the mother and son meet and greets. The celebration is usually in the month of November. The Goddess Renuka is believed to be the incarnation.
Above all, the Renuka fest stands for brotherhood among the people. It’s not alone a religious celebration at all. It is a blending of many cultural activities including music and dance where people exchange things on a message of brotherhood.
