Agra was the historical capital of the Mughals in India. It has many world-class heritage buildings including the Taj Mahal. It is the heritage city of India. Musamman Burj is a tower in Agra Fort. It was built by Shah Jahan for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. It was made in between 1631-40 of white marble and embellished with precious stones. It is a multi-storey tower and offers an exotic view of the famous Taj Mahal. At first there a small marble palace built by Akbar stood at this place which was demolished by Jahangir and later on Shah Jahan used this to build this tower because of its unique location.
Musamman Burj is made of delicate marble lattices with intricate carvings on it so that ladies can peek out of it and remain unseen themselves. The walls of the tower are designed with beautiful patterns. There is a marble dome on the top and verandahs surrounding it. In the centre of the structure, there is a beautiful fountain which adds to its beauty.
Shah Jahan had spent his last years here gazing the Taj Mahal when his son Aurangzeb imprisoned him. It also has a small room made of marble which was kept cool in the summers with the help of waterfall and channels. It is said that Shah Jahan was kept in this room. So when you visit Agra next time do visit this place to see the room where the Great Shah Jahan spent his last days.
