Itmad Ud Daulah tomb is situated on the bank of Yamuna River. It is a tomb of a Mughal noble who was the father of Nur Jahan, mother of Shah Jahan. It is also known as Baby Taj and the inspiration behind Taj Mahal. Its construction was started in 1622 by Nur Jahan. The idea behind the construction of this lovely monument was of a jewel box. It is the first structure made by the Mughals using marble.
It was the pioneer of the delicate artwork and the use of geometrical shapes in planning and designing the complex. This was the first time that semi-precious stones were used as embellishment on the walls of a tomb. Every wall was decorated with beautiful motifs of flowers, trees and geometrical shapes. If you have good knowledge of architecture then you can see the influence of Persian architecture in the making of this monument.
The importance of this monument also increased because it paved the way for the making of more such tombs and eventually led to the creation of the Taj Mahal. Some of the designs and artwork like marble net is much better than any other monument in Agra. The monument can be accessed via four gates and these gates are made of red sandstone.
The main tomb is square and is in the centre of the whole complex. It is surrounded by four minarets and square-shaped gardens from all sides. There are four rectangular pools as well in the complex. It is a perfect example of the use of geometrical shapes, gardens and water channels to create a masterpiece.
The best season to visit this monument is in winter season as the sun is bearable at that time. You should visit it during the sunset time and you will be presented with a glorious sight of the tomb shining in the setting sun.
