Diwan-i-Khas

Diwan-i-Khas is home to one of the finest monuments in Agra. It has stood guard to our cultural heritage from the past five centuries. It has also witnessed many wars and struggles and the lifestyles of various rulers before, during and after the Mughal era. If you want to relive the golden era of Indian history then you must visit the Agra Fort and see the marvelous structures present there. Diwan-i-Khas is also one of such beautiful structure which has great significance during the reign of Shah Jahan.

Diwan-i-Khas was constructed by Shah Jahan in the year 1635. It is also referred to as Hall of Private audience. It was constructed to entertain the state guests like kings, nobles, ambassadors and discuss the important affairs of the state. The hall has beautiful designs on its walls and is decorated with exquisite carvings and flat wood ceiling which had the design of golden and silver leaves. During the reign of Shah Jahan, the world-famous peacock throne was placed here as confirmed by various travellers of that time.

There are two halls in this beautiful monument. One hall had a raised platform on which peacock throne was placed and emperor used to sit on it and address the courtiers. The wall between the two halls has beautiful jali work in marble which shows the mastery of that technique at that time. The marble pillars are decorated with semi-precious stones and different patterns. The amazing floral work has been done in such a way that it gracefully catches your eyes. You would love the ambience of this place and should not miss it whenever you visit Agra fort. You can visit it anytime during the year but it is advisable to visit it in winters as the weather is enjoyable at that time.
