Agra Fort is situated on the bank of Yamuna River in Agra. It is made of red sandstone and that is why is also called Lal Qila. It is a witness to the Mughal history has seen it getting passed from one ruler to the other. It was used by Mughal emperors as their main residence till 1638. Agra was the capital city of Akbar the great and this fort was his seat.
It is a huge fort spread around 94 acres and has about seventy feet high walls surrounding it. It is a masterpiece if you look at its strategic location and the amount of planning that has gone into making it impregnable from all sides. It has witnessed three eras of Indian history – pre Mughal era, Mughal era and the British era.
You can find additions done by various Mughal Emperors at different times in this fort. If you have a keen eye for architecture then you can witness the transitioning in architecture that happened from Akbar to Shah Jahan through their different style of buildings and the different material used to construct it.
There are many historical monuments in this fort complex which have their own stories behind them and are a masterpiece on their own. The fort has two famous gates names Delhi Gate and Lahore Gate named after the two places which had great significance during the Mughal rule in India. Some of the other important monuments are Jahangir’s Hauz, Shahjahani Mahal, Ghaznin Gate, Jahangir’s Chain of Justice, The Muthamman Burj & Jharokha and Shish Mahal which is a glass palace made of mirrors imported from Syria.
You must visit it when you visit Agra as it reminds us of the golden history of India and shows the kind of military might and valour the rulers used to possess at that time.

The Agra Fort is located just 2.5 km away from Taj Mahal it is a good idea to combine scene of these two destinations together. The nearest railway station is Agra Cantt or Agra Cantonment. If you are 1st time visitor book a transport – Cab or Rickshaw – at a reasonable price. Railway station to Agra Fort is around 13 Km.
